Data Extractors Overview

The Pervasive Data Extractors are the tools to use for reading source data directly from a specific source application or file format, and writing the data to dozens of available targets. The Data Extractors support data extraction from a variety of data sources - including databases, text files, spreadsheets, application exports, etc. - all via native connectivity. The graphical tool gives you the power to completely view all the source data in its native format, so you can see the contents of the source data before mapping it to your target.

And that is only the beginning. A world class source-to-target drag-n-drop data mapping UI is available (with online video training) to perform any needed data re-structuring before it is written to the target. A full-blown transformation capability is in the same mapping UI, with easy wizards for record filtering and editing, reformatting, cleansing and manipulation of the data on-the-fly so that only clean data is loaded into your target!

SQL Databases

For RDBMS sources, the Data Extractor supports reading data from a single table, a database view, or joining multiple tables via SQL statements to read exactly the data you need. Many features are available (in fact, too many to mention here, give it a try!): e.g., single-step visual debugging of transformations, detailed logging, before and after views of the data...and more!

On the Target side, you have an abundant choice of adapters to choose from for writing data into the most recent versions of databases, spreadsheets, and file formats. You might find the standard client-based adapters suitable. However, there are also target adapters for high-speed data uploads over the network, as well as mass-insert adapters that exploit RDBMS database APIs for extremely high-speed insertion of data into your target database. Target adapters such as Oracle Database, Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB2, and others offer the very sophisticated Multimode Adapter that takes full advantage of the target database's SQL interface (though hiding the complexity from the User) to produce highly-optimized SQL streams for even the most complicated data loads; e.g., loading or inserting into multiple tables in the same pass, or performing multiple SQL operations (Insert, Delete, Update) in the same pass - with the added ability to pass these SQL streams native to the database API in real-time during the upload, or if preferred, via an offline SQL Script file that the Data Loader will produce for you automatically. Or finally, you can select the "offline" Adapter that produces database SQL Loader files that are perfectly pre-formatted for fast and easy data loads into your database using the database's loader utility.

Applications

For application sources, the Data Extractors support reading data directly from the application and writing the data to dozens of target databases, other applications, spreadsheets, and data file formats. Many features are available; e.g., single-step visual debugging of transformations, detailed logging, before and after views of the data...and more!

On the Target side, you have an abundant choice of adapters to choose from, and with the power and features to visually map and manipulate the data to fit into your target.

File Formats

For file sources, the Data Extractors support reading data directly from the source data file, including knowledge of data types, field names, and other built-in intelligence about the source, and writing the data to dozens of target databases, applications, spreadsheets, and other file formats. Many features are available; e.g., single-step visual debugging of transformations, detailed logging, before and after views of the data...and more!

On the Target side, you have an abundant choice of adapters to choose from, each with the power and features to visually map the data to your target. The RIFL Expression builder is available to help you build rules to filter data records and/or to clean and manipulate the data to fit your target database, application, or data file exactly as required. You can save your work and re-use your data mapping specifications over and over again...each time you need to load data from the same source to the same target!

ODBC Connectivity

Pervasive DataTools support ODBC connectivity to source databases, applications, and data files. We offer two DataTools, each of which supports a different "level" or "tier" of ODBC connectivity, as follows:

  • Tier 1 - Connects to data files and desktop applications
  • Tier 2 - Connects to data files, desktop applications, and SQL databases

Tier 1 ODBC Extractor

The Data Extractor from ODBC Tier 1 supports ODBC connectivity to virtually any source data file or desktop application for which you have an ODBC driver installed and configured. Some examples are:

  • Microsoft Access
  • Microsoft Excel
  • dBASE
  • FoxPro
  • Visual FoxPro
  • Paradox
  • CSV Text Files

ODBC Extractor

The Data Extractor from ODBC supports ODBC connectivity to everything in the Tier 1 Extractor PLUS any SQL database for which you have an ODBC driver installed and configured. Some examples are:

  • Microsoft SQL Server
  • Oracle Database
  • Sybase
  • IBM DB2
  • Red Brick
  • Teradata

The ODBC Extractor is perfect for connecting to those SQL databases for which the DataTools do not provide native connectivity.
