The following are the basic screens in the Data UpLoader to Salesforce.com.
Connect to the Source
On the UpLoader Source tab, you select any one of the dozens of database and file connectors. Select the format that matches the format of the source file/table to which you want to connect and read the data.
Browse Source Data
The built-in Source Data Browser allows you to view the contents of the source data file/table in tabular (row and column) format. This is a great way to verify that you are connected to the correct source file/table and that the Data UpLoader is reading the file correctly...and without the need to exit the Loader or open another application.
Connect to SFDC
On the UpLoader Target tab, you select the Salesforce.com connector. The Data UpLoader to Salesforce.com supports the current hosted version. The Data UpLoader Target & Events Wizard for Salesforce.com will launch. The next 7 screens show the Wizard steps.
Login to SFDC
Step 1 of the Target & Events Wizard prompts for your login credentials to Salesforce.com. Enter your SFDC UserID and Password in the boxes. The Data UpLoader will connect to Salesforce.com if you enter your login correctly and have Internet connectivity.
Select Target Operation
Step 2 of the Wizard gives you the choice of performing one of three types of target operations: 1) An initial data load OR 2) Inserting new and updating existing (called upsert) records OR 3) Deleting existing records in the target entity.
Select Entity Optimization
Step 3 of the Wizard offers two options that determimne how the UpLoader builds the list of available target SFDC entities. If you want to connect to either the Leads, Contacts, Accounts, or Opportunities entity, select "Optimize for Speed". If you want to select any other entity, select "Complete Entity List", and the UpLoader will build a list of all available entities in your implementation of Salesforce.com.
Select Target Entity
Step 4 of the Wizard presents a list of the SFDC entities based on your selection in the previous step (Entity Optimization). Simply highlight the desired target entity in the Target Entities box on the box and click the right arrow to place the entity name in the Selected Entity box on the right. This is the SFDC entity to which you will connect in this map.
Select a Key Field
Step 5 of the Wizard displays a list of the data fields from the SFDC entity you selected in the previous step. When performing an upsert (insert new & update existing records) or a delete, the Data UpLoader must know which data field to use for matching source and target records.
Select Target Options
Step 6 of the Wizard offers options for handling null values and reading key field values when the target operation is upsert or delete. You may choose how the map handles empty strings or nulls globally when writing data to the target entity. And you can select whether the UpLoader should build an index file of the values in the key field to insure accurate record matching for upserts or deletes.
Select Mapping Options
Step 7 is the final Wizard step. It allows you to choose whether or not you want the UpLoader to auto-map source fields to the target entity based on exact or similar field names. The second choice asks where you want to "land" in the UpLoader when the wizard closes.
Map Data Fields
On the Map Fields tab, you may use a variety of techniques to control the exact format of the data that is written to your target entity. After the auto-mapping is completed, you may drag and drop, type, use the Mapping Wizard, and/or use the RIFL expression builder to map and manipulate source data to your target fields.
Run the Map
After all of your field mapping is complete, you simply click the Run Map button in the tool bar. The UpLoader executes the map, performing all of the operations, data mapping, and transformations that you designed in the UpLoader.
Browse Target Data
The built-in Target Data Browser allows you to view the contents of the target entity in tabular (row and column) format. This is a great way to verify that that your target data is being written correctly...and without the need to exit the Data UpLoader. NOTE: You may also save your map specifications by clicking the Save button before exiting the Data UpLoader.
View Sample Record in SFDC
The results of your selections and mapping can be seen by viewing the detail page of any of the affected records in Salesforce.com. This is a sample Contact record showing clean data that was inserted by the Data UpLoader to Salesfoce.com.
